CancerCare Manitoba, formerly The Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, is a government-sponsored organization
responsible for cancer detection, treatment, and research in the province of Manitoba. Primary cancer treatment is provided
at several facilities, all of which report to the main CancerCare facility in downtown Winnipeg.
As CancerCare's IT infrastructure expanded and available office space diminished, trailers were placed on the rooftop of the downtown facility
as a temporary solution to house the growing IT staff and equipment. It was intended to last for
three years but this short-term solution has now been in place for an extensive period of time.
To alleviate their current cramped environment, a new building, featuring state-of-the-art technology, is under construction
next door to the original facility and will be ready in 2002. As the CancerCare staff are moved into Phase 1 of the new facility the existing building
will be renovated. With a new facility under construction CancerCare's IT services
concluded this was a great time to redesign CancerCare's data network.
This presented CancerCare with the opportunity to invest in network technology that enabled them to improve the delivery and
timeliness of patient care. The existing building needed to be able to satisfy their IT needs at the moment and still be available
in the future. The network infrastructure was not in place for the amount of work they needed. This meant a wireless solution was
the best option for networking.
With the 3Com® AirConnect® Wireless LAN, CancerCare staff have been able to move around the office and still have access to a central
database of patient information. This solution delivers a seamless transition from desktop to wireless access to database information
from one building to another.
